COMMON CONDITIONS

In our practice, we see a wide variety of conditions. Our clinicians, Physiotherapists and Osteopaths have outlined some common issues below.

BACK PAIN

Back pain, lower back pain, upper back pain is something that as Physiotherapist and Osteopaths we see every day. From acute issues, where someone hurts themselves either that day or only a few days prior, to chronic issues which have been around for a long time.”

We understand that pain can definitely be debilitating, especially when it comes to the back. We often treat these conditions after consulting with our patients and working out the best treatment options, whether it be, massage, dry needling, strengthening, etc. The outcome will drive our search for the best treatment options for our patients.

If you have recently hurt your back, a great tip is to give your heat pack a work out through where the area of pain is and rest. If this doesn’t seem to help, one of our Physios or Osteos would be more than happy to help you through your injury.

If you have a more chronic and persistent condition, you may be wanting another opinion or guidance in your rehabilitation and recovery. Our clinicians would be more than happy to offer at least an opinion (perhaps differing) and offer some help in your care.

SHOULDER PAIN

Shoulder pain is one of the most common conditions treated by our team, but with the right assessment and treatment, shoulder pain wont keep ruining your day!

The first step: discovering where the pain is coming from. Shoulder pain could be caused by the bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons and nerves of the shoulder but sometimes, pain coming from the neck (cervical spine), or upper back (thoracic spine), can felt by the body as shoulder pain (this is called referred pain).

Once our Physiotherapist and Osteopath has determined which structure and area is to blame, they will use the appropriate treatment technique such as dry needling, spinal mobilisation or soft tissue work. Taping and specific exercises can also be used to ensure improvements become long term changes!

So, give us call or book online if you would like your shoulder pain treated by one of our Physios or Osteos!

LYMPHOEDEMA

Fluid build-up within the body is known as oedema. Oedema happens when the blood vessels or tissues within your body become trapped and now contain extra fluid. Oedema can be caused from various factors such as serous medical conditions, injuries, pregnancy, medicines, surgeries, or just long days being on your feet. The most common sites of oedema are within the arms and feet but can be found throughout the whole body.

A common symptom of this condition is heaviness in the limbs. We find patients suffering from this condition struggle with daily tasks such as walking or putting their shoes on.

Oedema can be treated by our clinicians in a range of ways:

  • Manual techniques
  • Advice and compression garments
  • Exercises

Special equipment designed for Lymphoedema management (e.g. LymphaTouch)

Now also stocking and fitting Bauerfeind compression garment solutions in clinic.

At the clinic, we treat this fluid buildup (Lymphoedema) using a manual modality and machine, the LymphaTouch system. The LymphaTouch reduces swelling and pain while speeding up the healing process. The Device uses a mixture of negative pressure and mechanical vibrations to achieve this. Adding this device to our clinical expertise will give you as the patient the best chance to recover from your injury.

The fluid moves through a pathway all the way from the affected area up through to the chest. We use techniques that free up joints in the pathway and decrease the tightness of muscles. A technique such as massaging the fluid back up this pathway can quickly decrease swelling and heaviness in the affected area.

If you’re ready to fight the swelling book an appointment today online or call us on 03 9783 1715

SPORTS INJURIES

If you’re a dedicated athlete or a weekend warrior we’ve got you covered! Our Physios and Osteos have keen skills when it comes to sports injuries. At Beach Street Spinal and Pilates, we see patients that have rolled their ankle, strained their knee/s, torn their hamstring, corked the thigh (thankfully not all at the same time) just to name a few. These injuries respond very well to well established protocols and treatments, we often see great outcomes in short periods of time with our patients. It might mean some time away from what you love, but the wait definitely is worth hitting the ground running instead of crawling, hoping not to hurt yourself again!

CHRONIC FATUIGE - DYSAUTONOMIA

Something that is not so commonly understood by our medical field are issues of Dysautonomia, an example of which is Chronic fatigue. To sum up, dysautonomia simply means that the body’s automatic functions such as heart rate, energy levels, blood pressure, breathing rate, digestion, are often out of order or not working properly. We often see these conditions in our patients. The patients don’t generally think to mention these to us at first. Usually our patients have attended Physio or Osteo for back pain (usually middle back issues), but on probing further, we find out that there are other issues that are either being treated by medical professionals or are getting investigated. We usually find that with our treatments (manual and exercise based) our patients often report that the other body issues start working better.

Some other examples of Dysautonomia issues can include:

  • Migraines
  • Cyclical vomiting
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Adrenal dysfunction
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Long Covid recovery

We know that general exercise is often prescribed to patients as a rule for these and others but with limited results and adherence. Our patients often say that the exercises hurt too much and just don’t follow through. We have to take the time to work out the most appropriate plan and regime that will work for each individual and not a one size fits all approach, in particular with these complex and long standing conditions. When we work together with our patients, we see the best results which is definitely the most rewarding experience for us as therapists and our patients.

HEADACHES AND MIGRAINES

Headaches and migraines are also a common presentation to our practice. This is also a very interesting part of our work. Understanding mechanisms and what we call differential diagnosis (all the potential ways that headaches can come to be) is fundamental. Physiotherapy and Osteopathy is very effective when headaches or migraines are caused from neck tension or upper back tension or stiffness. The relationship of the upper spine and the nerves into the head is intimate.

The correct intervention, whether it be some specific spinal stretching or, dry needling, postural or “core” training or a combination of all of the above, can lead to significant improvements almost immediately. In combination with your therapist, it is often possible to work out when and how the headaches started and then treat again the main causes of the problem.

CHEST PHYSIOTHERAPY AND OSTEOPATHY

Our clinicians also treat patients with respiratory issues. Some of these conditions include: Asthma, COPD, Emphysema, Bronchitis, Atelectasis, Bronchiectasis, Cystic fibrosis, long COVID-19, etc.

Our involvement includes the management of clients with excessive airway secretions, maximising oxygenation, improving lung volume, preserving musculoskeletal function, and providing advice and education to patients and their carers.

The purpose of chest Physiotherapy and Osteopathy are:

  • To facilitate removal of retained airway secretions.
  • To optimize lung compliance and the ventilation
  • To decrease the work of breathing.
  • Improve exercise tolerance
  • Prevent secondary complications

FLOAT TANK

What is floating?

Floating also known as sensory deprivation, offers a warm and welcoming environment where you can focus on you.

Floating occurs in a floatation pod, or isolation tank, which is a cocoon like structure built using the best quality fiberglass and plastics with a door which can be shut or kept open during the float session.

On the inside, you will find an inviting, softly lit up tub (using LED lights) of 30cm deep water kept at a constant 35°Celsius. The water containing Epsom salts will hold your body off the floor of the tank floating with no floating equipment. When floating, you can shut off the lights, close your eyes and enjoy the floating experience where the time is purely yours.

The float tank is both sound and light proof, and provides your brain the opportunity to disconnect from the constant bombardment of sensory input and enhance your ability to be mindful and present. The experience leaves you feeling deeply relaxed and re-invigorated as we facilitate replenishing your energy levels. There is simply no other technology or environment that can stimulate these basic human needs, rest and isolation.
